John 8:37-47
Sermon Response
WHOSE CHILD ARE YOU?
The Text: Read John 8:37-47
Jesus is talking to a group of Jews in the temple court. The conversation has shifted to heritage. The listeners are passionate about their birthright as children of Abraham. Jesus, fueled by their disbelief, tells the group they look more like children of Satan than children of Abraham or God. Jesus then explains that if they were children of God they would love Him and listen to His voice.
Discuss:
What were the benefits of being a descendant of Abraham?
What did Abraham “do” that the crowd did not?
Why is Satan the father of lies?
Are there any other verses that talk about Jesus being sinless? Why is this important?
Respond: Whose child are you?
1. Children of God listen to His word, love His Son, and in faith obey His commands. Which of these three to you struggle with the most?
Children of Satan listen to his lies, love this world, and obey the sinful/murderous/prideful desires of their heart. Do you struggle with any of these things?
READ 1 John 5:1-5 & 13
1 John 5:1-5 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
1 John 5:13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.
List all of the attributes of a child of God from the passage above. Are you currently living as a child of God?? Why or why not.
Prayer
God thank you for paving the way for us to be called your children. May you give us the grace necessary today to live as your children. Make us victorious in faith over this world, give us grace to love you and your people more, and help us obey your commands. May we live in full confidence that you have provided eternity for all who truly believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that your raised him from the dead.
